Great Old One of the Month....Shub-Niggurath. Well last month we did not get on bended knee for worship but instead had a topic on the magical beasties of the Dreamlands but this month its time to roll the scrolls out and chant Ia! Ia! Sub Niggurath!!! For Shubby is our Great Old One this month. Fitting as it will ground us a bit from our more nautical themes of the seaside town of Kingsport & the often nautical tales of our featured writer William Hope Hodgson. So Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Wood with a Thousand Young, is a popular deity in the Mythos despite not having a single story by Lovecraft devoted to her. Shubby is however mentioned in several stories and also in several of the revisions often in the form of chants. She (as Shub-Nigguraths gender is often considered female), first appeared in the revision story The Last Test, 1928. She was referred to as the All-Mother & wife of Not-To-Be-Named One. Possibly Hastur or Yog-Sothoth..She is the mother of Nug & Yeb. & all her young are referred to as Dark Young. Of her appearance Lovecraft described her as an evil cloud like entity despite the goat & woods references in her name. So ready the sacrifices and share some thoughts on dear old Shub-Niggurath...Ia! Ia!! Well be having Shubby stories all month as topics.
