Great Yarmouth Road Runners achieved some excellent results at the BAM Nuttall Freethorpe 10 mile race on Sunday organised by Great Yarmouth and District Athletic Club. This is the seventh year this race has been held and it continues to go from strength to strength with a record 405 runners completing the race. The race started at Freethorpe village hall and runners headed south on quiet country roads taking in the riverside at Reedham before looping back to Freethorpe. Conditions could not have been better with fifteen members of the club racing, (three of them racing for the club for the first time), ten achieving personal bests and four winning age group trophies. Mark Thompson had an excellent race getting his best ever 10 mile time of 57.49 in 5th place overall, 2nd in the senior men’s age group and first home for the club. Sean Jermy showed he was back on form after a recent injury, coming in next for the club in 17th place with a personal best time of 1.01.40. Andrew Baker, Myles Duffield, Mark Stone and Simon Bekker spent the race chasing each other which seemed to work to their advantage as they all came in under 1 hour 10 minutes, all with personal best times, with new club member Myles knocking over 6 minutes off his previous year’s race time. Also in his first race for the club, Darren Honour set a great personal best time of 1.13.27 coming through the finish with Stuart Canwell also achieving a pb. John Bone came 2nd in the men’s 65-69 age group with a superb time of 1.15.29. Matt Buckoke only reached the start with seconds to spare after cycling to the race from Gorleston as part of his Ironman training but suffering a puncture along the way. He still came in with 1.16.05. The first two club ladies home showed their London Marathon training is going well, Frankie Turner in 1.20.32 pb and Lorrain Dawson 1.22.32, picking up the third place trophy for the ladies 55-59 age group. Paul Westgate was next back followed by Carole Spong winning the second place trophy for the ladies 65+ age group. In her first race for the club, Jody Donaldson was next in with 1.31.11 5 Mark Thompson 57:49:00 pb 17 Sean Jermy 01:01:40 pb 70 Andrew Baker 01:08:23 pb 75 Myles Duffield 01:08:59 pb 80 Mark Stone 01:09:47 pb 82 Simon Bekker 01:09:43 pb 124 Darren Honour 01:13:27 pb 125 Stuart Canwell 01:13:27 pb 150 John Bone 01:15:29 161 Matt Buckoke 01:16:05 213 Francesca Turner 01:16:05 pb 235 Lorrain Dawson 01:22:32 265 Paul Westgate 01:24:29 328 Carole Spong 01:31:11 332 Jody Donaldson 01:32:00 pb Meanwhile, another three lady club runners decided they’d prefer to be up to their waists in muddy dyke water on Sunday and took part in the Reepham Runners cross country race. This 10k race starts at Whitwell train station and takes in part of the Marriott Way before heading over meadows, fields and through dykes. Nicola Baker was third lady (happy with her bar of chocolate as a prize), followed by a muddy Karen Manning and Jo Smithson in her first cross country race.
