Great column by the Detroit Free Presss Brian Dickerson and share by Brain Injury Association of Michigan - BIAMI. If the coaches, athletic directors, the doctors and the other sports professionals are to be trusted with the health and welfare of student athletes, then they need to educate themselves on the dangers of concussion injuries and, most importantly, be ready, willing and able to protect their student athletes from those dangers whenever and however necessary. Mr. Dickerson makes a great point: The truth is that oversize defensive linemen level vulnerable quarterbacks all the time, and concussions have been commonplace for decades. What has changed is the players and publics tolerance for the complacent attitude of professional and collegiate league officials, who have only recently begun to acknowledge the serious health hazards faced by athletes who sustain repeated concussions.
