Great day trip out yesterday to Borakolalo and then across to - TopicsExpress

Great day trip out yesterday to Borakolalo and then across to Kgomo-kgomo Zaagkuildrift. Main target birds were the Kingfishers, cuckoos, Scops Owl and a shortlist of woodland species. Was surprised to find Borakolalo quite dry - despite all the rain we had in Pretoria this last week. We recorded all the cuckoo species at Borakolalo, but other than Great Spotted which seemed everywhere, they were less active than expected and we did not manage visuals of African Cuckoo. Interesting was a black morph Jacobin. Saw no less than three Half-collared Kingfishers on the river and also ticked African Pygmy and Grey-hooded Kingfisher. Heading eastwards to Kgomo-kgomo and Pienaarsriver the day turned into a bit of a raptor fest as we lucked across a Tawny Eagle, followed by a dark phase Booted Eagle and a rather distant Lesser Spotted Eagle. Other nice birds included Striped Pipit, Abdims Stork, Common Swift and an African Scops-owl.
