Great interactive map illustrating the scale and speed of urban growth from 1800 to today. In 1800, only 3 cities -- London, Beijing (then called Peking) and Guangzhou (then called Canton) -- had 750,000+ inhabitants. By 1900, 25 cities including New York, Berlin and Rio de Janeiro had grown to 750,000+. By 1950, there were 105 cities of 750,000+, with New York and Tokyo becoming the first mega-cities of 10 million+ inhabitants. In 2010, there were 611 cities of 750,000+, with many more mega-cities from Cairo to Lagos to Shenzhen, which hardly existed 50 years previously. China has 21 of the world’s 100 largest cities. India has 9 and the USA 13. Brazil has 8, Japan 2 and the UK 1. Tokyo is still the worlds largest city with a whopping 37 million residents, followed by Mexico City, Delhi, and New York with 20+ million. iied.org/cities-interactive-data-visual
