Great local Event: Wednesday July 24th – Androscoggin River Watershed Council Special EventSpeaker: Woodrow Thompson, Maine Geological Survey Title of talk: The Ice Age Geology of the upper Androscoggin River Valley Woody Thompson’s talk will introduce the Ice Age glaciers that played a major role in shaping Maine’s landscape. He will describe the remarkable features left by the last great ice sheet, including glacial lakes that formerly existed in the Bethel area. The talk will emphasize the region between Rumford, Maine, and Berlin, N.H. “Woody” teaches geology courses and has collaborated on numerous research projects with the University of Maine, including development of the Ice Age Trail in Hancock and Washington Counties. He has published extensively on the glacial geology of Maine and the White Mountains and most recently has been mapping the midcoast region from Damariscotta to Penobscot Bay. Woody’s other interests include the minerals and mining history of New England. He is also co-author of the new book titled “The Geology of New Hampshire’s White Mountains”.
