Newsletter of the INTERNATIONAL GIFTED EDUCATION TEACHER-DEVELOPMENT NETWORK (IGET-Network, LLC) http:/iget-network.org Volume 7, No. 4- February, 2014 A Tribute to Being Gifted in Leadership Ability Legacy of the late Nelson Mandela On December 5, 2013, citizens of the United States joined the people of South Africa in simultaneously mourning the death and celebrating the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, affectionately known as Madiba. Since Madiba’s passing, social and print media around the globe continue to recount stories of this great icon of a man and gift to the world. We at the IGET-Network, can either write more of the same, echoing a fraction of what millions have already stated, or we can pay tribute. We have chosen the latter. We honor Madibas life by recognizing all categories of giftedness, including the obvious gift of leadership. In South Africa, giftedness is a term infrequently used, if used at all. Hearing or reading the word gifted does not resonate or mean much, especially concerning culturally diverse school age children who have not had the advantage of educational opportunities to excel beyond their unique abilities. In contrast, in the United States (dating back to the early 20th century), disciplines such as educational psychology and early childhood first recognized high intelligence as the only gifted trait. Later, scholars like Howard Gardner (Harvard University) recognized and disseminated other manners of giftedness: creatively gifted, academically gifted, artistically gifted, athletically gifted, linguistically gifted and leadership-ability gifted. Still, emergent leaders - and great men and women like Mr. Mandela - have not made their way into psychology and education journals as people possessing this one quality that sets them apart from most. So in this issue, we pay tribute to Mr. Mandela and other emerging global leaders possessing exceptional abilities. In the story that follows is another category of gifted people left behind and hardly recognized by lay and professionals alike: men and women who possess qualities that place them in the Twice-Exceptional Gifted category. Just who are the twice-exceptional gifted individuals? According to the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC), the more commonly used term for a gifted student with a co-occurring disability, is twice-exceptional learner. Please meet Shawn Anthony Robinson. Shawn Anthony Robinson, M.Ed. Cardinal Stritch University Shawn Anthony Robinson, M.Ed, is a doctoral candidate at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) in the Literacy and Language program. His concentration is on giftedness and dyslexia. Robinson brings a wealth of academic experience, training and knowledge about the psychological development of dyslexia, especially among Black males who have not tapped into their gifts because of their misdiagnosis and inability to read or spell. He is an emerging national speaker, and one of few scholars in the United States with a research focus on the scholarship, theory and literature addressing theoretical or psychological frameworks investigating twice-exceptional Black males who have dyslexia. Practitioners working with gifted Black males with dyslexia must understand how these students navigate educational systems, understand their unique learning styles, and how they construct knowledge through different sociocultural experiences, which are associated with their self-perception, self-esteem and sense of identity. Robinson provides high-quality instruction using the phonemic sound structure of the American-English language, and organizational strategies to enable students with dyslexia to become academically independent in reading and spelling. He is also no stranger to academic obstacles as he was first diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 18 and a senior in high school. Robinson began his collegiate journey with the grade equivalent of 5.4 in word identification, 2.3 in comprehension, 1.8 in math, 2.3 in spelling and k.7 in word attack. With hard work and determination, he has succeeded in college and is completing his doctoral degree. You can read more about his story at relentlesrobinson. He can be contacted directly at [email protected]. ___________________________ Symposium on Culturally Diverse Gifted, Talented and Creative Learners October 16-18, 2014 University of the Witwatersrand-Wits School of Education Linder Auditorium Keynote Speaker, Professor Donna Y.
