Great night of Americana @ the local ballyard last night. The Iowa - TopicsExpress

Great night of Americana @ the local ballyard last night. The Iowa Cubs have gotten into the habit of a pre-game citizenship ceremony as part of their annual 4th of July hoo-ha. Last night 31 new Yankees were minted from the following 19 foreign lands by my scribbled count: Mexico, Viet Nam, Bosnia, Nicaragua, Turkey, Serbia-Herzegovina, Brazil, China, Iran, The Philippines, South Sudan, United Kingdom, Liberia, Russia, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, India and Burma. The oath administered by Judge Robert Pratt was festooned with words like ‘prince’ and ‘potentate’ and the ballpark was festooned with red, white and blue bunting and later the sky was festooned with every color there is, just like our country. Guess we still got it, eh? Judge Pratt and I-Cub potentate Michael Gartner both offered some choice personal remarks and later, during the ballgame itself, the local boys swatted back-to-back-to-back homers for the first time in 14 years (I wanna swear I was there that night with two then-small boys) and everything was just fine even though Memphis eventually won, 6-5. Read Garrison Keillor’s essay about real potato salad, google the youtube video of Barney Fife reciting the preamble to the Constitution and have a great holiday!
