Great photograph of the Weave Room at the Boott Cottom Mills Museum, Lowell National Historical Park. Visiting the Weave Room when the machinery is running give you a very real sense of what it must have been like when young women first came to Lowell in the 1820s and 1830s to labor in the citys many mills. And, it becomes easy to imagine what workers from the rural countryside of Ireland must have felt like when they saw a collection of noisy, hard-pounding machinery with belts spinning, shuttles flying, and cotton dust in the air. Young women writing letters home after they began working in the mills often commented that as they first traveled to the city they could hear Lowell before they saw it.
