Great piece, attributable to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko. Good research, but limited analysis, scope and discussion. Gabby is a research fellow, thus could have done us a lot more good by widening his perspective, especially when he attempts to establish a positive correlation between age: experience, maturity and competence. However, I think competence is independent on age, but a function of many other factors. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah became prime minister at 43, and subsequently Ghanas first president @ 51 not 72, but his competence I am sure we cannot dispute. Ian Khama of Botswana, Robert Mogabe of Zimbabwe, Quattara and many others have their stories for or against the age debate. I will not discuss age within the context of delivery, but common sense. 1. At 70 and above, you may in most cases no matter how strong be prone to ill health. By our nature, self preservation is inherent and paramount. You are more likely to fail in any endeavour not necessarily because you are incompetent, but overly concerned with health than equally important issues, a reason America in their wisdom rejected John MaCain, not incompetence necessarily. Even life insurance policies explain this better, high risk @ 70. (good book, Bible acknowledges 70 as a high risk age) 2. @ 70, you should be seen as a mentor, role model, repository of wisdom and many more. You should be our last resort not the first option. The concern isn’t necessarily about number, but strength. Let’s not in our swift quest to score selfish political points push our aged away. Let’s guide them to feel loved and live long enough to be relevant in their advisory roles as statesmen. I absolutely agree with Quattara’s gains, but disagree with the lopsided discussion. You don’t need to work this hard scouting for justification why Nana Addo has come back, take a breath, and think again, the facts are right before you
