Great post from Tissa Godavitarne on the recent chatter about cross-recruiting. Ill be the first to say that Ive had different perspectives on this over the years. For a long time, I had Tissas perspective (below).... ....then I had a more legalistic approach that was fear-based and scarcity-based.... .....then I found a middle ground which acknowledges that my team are not my children...and theyre not my employees. Theyre ENTREPRENEURS....and we dont own our teams. People are free to make their own decisions about where and whom they will work with. And trying to prevent that from happening is the OPPOSITE of freedom and entrepreneurship. Ironically, one of the people in our industry who was arguing the hardest for the freedom angle a few months ago is now spending his time arguing for controlling people. Go figure. Its entirely based in fear and anxiety....not freedom. Heres my take: if I have a relationship with someone -- especially a pre-existing relationship that extends back for years and years -- I reserve all the freedom in the world to talk to them about anything I want. If someone has a problem with that......it says more about them than it does about me. Beware of people who tell you that they believe in freedom who simultaneously want to tell you that you arent free to communicate with with others or make business decisions different from theirs.
