Great read by James Spann - a great meteorologist who knows his stuff. I have to agree with everything he says - I feel the same way when a forecast ends up busting. Lot of pressure on meteorologists to get winter forecasts correct. Not sure why forecasters even mention a dusting of snow. In actuality there is nothing wrong with saying a dusting to an inch or two of snow. What is a dusting? Different people have different opinions on that subject. I would consider a dusting to be an inch or less. But, that is just me. If a forecaster calls for a dusting of snow - the ground is dusted white - well, that in actuality could be 1/2 to 1 of snow. People want precise numbers. I am not sure why people want EXACT numbers when it comes to forecasting snow. Sure, there is a huge difference between a dusting/1 or so of snow and 10 of snow - but who cares if it snows four inches vs two inches? The impact will basically be the same. Roads still need to be treated. There will still be slick spots. A dusting of snow or a skiff of freezing rain can cause MASSIVE problems if road temperatures are cold. Thus, I dont see a lot of use in calling for a dusting of snow. Anyway, this is a great read by James Spann birminghamwx/?p=78584
