Great review of The Battle of the Five Armies (which I havent seen - TopicsExpress

Great review of The Battle of the Five Armies (which I havent seen yet) which pretty much encapsulates my feelings about all the Hobbit movies. Im not sure I agree with Adam when he calls Tolkien a pre-Romantic writer though - hes always struck me as *very* 20th century, post-naturalist, post-trenches, death-of-innocence, pretty much the opposite of CS Lewis. His world-weariness, cynicism, and in the real world, there are orcs on both sides worldview makes LOTR (the novels) almost feel modernist (at least in its ideas). Not The Hobbit, though; although thats hardly surprising. TBH Im hoping the Hobbit films drop swiftly into obscurity; the LOTR films stand up to scrutiny, but again as an interpretation of Tolkien which miss vast swathes of what he was trying to say - except, perhaps, in the Arwen / Strider relationship, ironically enough...
