Great worship today at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church in Birmingham! The music, Scripture readings, prayers, and a testimony by a young woman who is a deacon – Summer Hyche – magnified the name of Christ. The service began with a “BIessing of Backpacks” as children came forward with their backpacks as they begin another school year. It was really cool to see all those children at the altar this morning and hear them recite a refrain in the litany four times: “Jesus is with me.” I was blessed to be the preacher and hope the sermon ministered and, most importantly, pleased Christ. And there was an added blessing granted to me. Tyler Davis was present! Tyler is the son of Steve and Sheri Davis, and a 2009 graduate of Carrollton High School. He has a bachelor’s from Samford and a master’s from the University of Alabama. He works at the Birmingham branch of one of the big four accounting firms. He had no idea I was preaching! Tyler and I had a delightful lunch after worship. It was good to catch up with him. He is a fine young man. I’m very proud of him. I was and am blessed! “Jesus is with me.” Thanks be to God!
