Greatness. A word that seems used to often. However, in this brief moment, it fits. Yet it also falls short. Stuart Scott brought a new era to sports journalism. His grasp of the Kings English was incredible. His scripts wove a tapestry on even the most benign of evenings. While we might not care about the score of the Clippers game, he made the story fun and strangely authentic. As a father , he loved his daughters more than life itself. He fought the good fight. He kept working when most of us would have simply chosen to stay home. The man changed a medium. Sports Center will never be the same. Like a great quarterback, he brought out the best in everyone. Like a prize fighter, he kept throwing punches when his body was tattered and torn. I had the pleasure of meeting Stuart one morning. I was in NY on sales calls and we were staying at the same hotel. He was waiting on his car service and I on my cab. I approached him and quietly told him I enjoy your work. He said thank you and ask what part of the south I was from. My accent betrayed me. We talked about how digital was changing things and a few laughs about being southern. He was dressed to the nines as usual. His interest in my career was humbling. Its who he was. He cared, he loved people and knew that viewers paid his bills. Humble, sharp and a gentlemen. Not wanting to impose I thanked him for his time and was beginning to step aside when he he said thanks for the complement and it was nice to meet you. Yeah, I was probably giddy as I got in my cab, but Im not ashamed to admit it. He was the real deal and his talent was something to behold. I will always admire his work and his voice will be missed. Please join us in praying for his family, daughters and those he impacted so mightily. God Bless you #StuartScott. You were indeed cool as the other side of the pillow.
