Greatness is manifested in many ways. Some of us are born to make a huge impact on the world through our contribution to science, technology, the arts and various other fields. But for most of us greatness represents that peak performance in what we can and are able to achieve in our own lives. The poem and the video below affirm the greatness that lies in all of us. Mann Just like Christopher Columbus who kissed the ground When he arrived on the shores of the New World Just like Neil Armstrong talking to himself When he made the first human footstep on the moon, ‘That one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind’ Just like Mohandas Gandhi wept When the British finally acceded to India’s struggle for independence Just like Martin Luther King rejoiced When he saw his dream of becoming free at last transformed into reality Just like Joan d’Arc shouted to the top of her voice When she victoriously led the French against the English Just like Catherine the Great smiled When she defeated the Turkish Ottoman Empire Just like Julius Caesar being greeted with tumultuous applause When he expanded the Roman Empire to the Atlantic Ocean Just like Alexander the Great reveled When he humiliated the mighty Persian army Just like Napoleon Bonaparte gloating When the Austrians capitulated to France Just like Archimedes exclaiming, ‘Eureka!’ When he stepped into a bath and noticed the water level rising Just like Albert Einstein was elated When he stumbled upon the theory of relativity Just like Madam Curie was bewildered When she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize In each of us there is greatness And it is discovering who we are What we can accomplish If only we have the courage and the will to persevere No matter how impossible it seems As long as we believe As long as we pray As long as we keep hoping As long as we endeavor As long as there is life We are great!
