Greece, to many, is the dream vacation of a lifetime, the islands and beaches, the ruins and museums, the food and wine. But, to me, Greece is home and Greeks are my people. My passion is to share this wondrous and storied land, both the known and the not-so-known, with you. The tour will be broken into 4 major parts: Thessaloniki will be the launching point. This is the capital of Macedonia and the second largest city in Greece. Thessaloniki founded by King Cassander of Macedonia in 315 BC. The city soon became the commercial and cultural centre of Macedonia and of the Balkan Peninsula. Home of Alexander the Great and his father Phillip II; Thessaloniki has excellent restaurants, museums, its famous waterfront cafes and most historic landmark, the White Tower. There are also many ancient ruins to visit both in the city proper and the surrounding region. We will visit the remains at Vergina of Phillip II’s ancient palace and many other monuments dating back to the Byzantium time. Then the tour heads into Central Greece. Here you will experience not only the natural beauty of Greece’s mountain and beach landscapes but you will also be embedded in the lives of Greece’s everyday citizens. You will experience village life: the rhythm, the culture, the food and the handmade goods of the villagers’ daily life. Some of Greece’s storied history and mythology will come to life for you as you walk the slopes of Mt. Olympus, visit the battlefield of Sparta’s famed 300 and experience the mysterious environs of the Oracle of Delphi. Then, it’s on to the capital city of Athens. Athens will provide the luxury of city life alongside its incredible history represented by the ancient sites of the Acropolis and the original Olympic stadium. You will walk the same roads and pathways trod by ancient philosophers such as Plato and Socrates, visit museums with artefacts dating back to before the time of Christ and see many other ancient sites while also enjoying the amenities of modern Athens. Two days of fine dining and city tours will set you up for the final phase of the Greek experience: The Greek Islands – A major highlight will be enjoying the visual splendour of Santorini – the whitewashed walls of Santorin’s architecture topped by the sky blue domes of the many Orthodox churches and all of this set against the vivid red of the volcanic cliffs upon which they are perched. Add in the deep azure of the surrounding Aegean Sea and you will be tempted to sit spellbound for hours absorbing the view. But, the joy of touring the island and enjoying the nightlife will complete the island experience of Santorini. Finally, you will immerse yourself into the unique culture and lifestyle of Crete, Greece’s largest island. Again, enjoy the majesty of its mountainous terrain ringed by golden beaches and rocky shorelines. You will be thrilled by the ‘hands-on’ experience of turning Crete’s bounteous agriculture into the finished product as you share preparation duties of turning natural produce into delicious dishes using the inside knowledge of Greek recipes passed down over many generations. This is Greece!!! Its ancient civilization seen through the omnipresent ruins has given way to a modern culture found in its major cities but with a heartbeat that echoes its past. This heartbeat is found in the village life of its mainland and the big island of Crete. And, all of this history and culture is sprinkled with the beautiful jewellery of the Greek islands.
