Greek Coalition Government Likely To Splinter, But Elections - TopicsExpress

Greek Coalition Government Likely To Splinter, But Elections Avoided It was a long day in Greek party political history today on Thursday with much internal ranker in the tripartite coalition. The three party leaders meeting late in the evening ended without any consensus solution to the stand-off after the public broadcaster was closed. Most had hoped on a meeting of minds and a sensible compromise between the three, especially after the PM Samaras adopted a unilateral stance without first consulting with the other two leftist parties in the coalition. But Samaras had watered down significantly his original demands to find a solution that would not destabilize local politics. It seems from now on there will only be two parties in the coalition government commanding the slimmer vote of 153 members of the 300 seats parliament since the Democratic Left is looking for an exit over the public broadcasting debacle. The life span of the new government scheme between conservative New Democracy and arch rival socialists Pasok, look increasingly shaky for more than the short term. Friday morning in Athens will show whether the Democratic Left will or won’t be part of the governing majority any longer. Previous estimates that if Dim.Ar. left the governing coalition so would socialist Pasok have been disproved. No one in the tripartite former coalition wanted elections, but few want to shoulder the costs of tough reforms, especially when they feel the major ruling party New Democracy is being arrogant and ignores the need for consultation and coordination. Interesting times in Greek party politics with the current crisis coming to a resolution tomorrow morning on Friday … and no one knows how long a more limited coalition government may survive given very much tougher issues ahead.
