Green Party’s Russell Norman called it a “Cabinet club - TopicsExpress

Green Party’s Russell Norman called it a “Cabinet club budget….of the 1% by the 1% and for the 1%”, Winston Peters called it “cronies get cake, Kiwis get crumbs budget” and David Cunliffe called it “a fudge-it budget” but what was in the budget for Construction industry? It was disappointing to see no real solution to the serious problem of housing affordability. The temporary lifting of tariffs and duty on building material would have little impact on the upward cost pressures on the housing market. The Government remains firm that the high cost of housing has to do with limited supply and local Councils’ reluctance to release new land for development but, as we have experienced first-hand here in Christchurch, you cannot allow large-scale developments without considering their impact on infrastructure and transport problems. We think the Government has to do more to lower construction costs.
