Greenpeacers, its time to celebrate! Overnight, Japan’s ‘scientific whaling’ programme in the Antarctic Ocean was declared illegal in an international court [1]. This is a remarkable end to a chapter in the battle to stop hundreds of whales being killed each year in the name of research. This is your victory, Christine. Together with other environment groups, weve campaigned for decades to stop Japans annual ‘scientific’ whaling expedition and expose it for what it really is -- a cover for continued commercial hunting. And now one of the most respected courts in the world has agreed with us. To every single one of the Greenpeace supporters who have been part of this campaign: congratulations! Since the seventies, thousands of whales have been harpooned at sea some 6,000 km from Japan, then hauled onto ships and ferried back to port. It’s a brutal, unnecessary practice Christine -- and today, for millions of Greenpeace supporters worldwide, consigning it to the history books is finally within reach. I am so proud of that. And I have people like you to thank, Christine. For the oceans, Ben Pearson Programme Director Greenpeace Australia Pacific
