Greensboro News & Record expresses dismay at ideological effort to undo years of work to create new, higher academic standards for our kids. GNR writes, The legislature has thrown many abrupt changes at North Carolina schools. Now it’s going to reverse a process that had been under way for years and promised to put North Carolina in line with the rest of the country. There’s reason to worry that this won’t turn out well. Consistent follow through is important when instituting change in large organizations. Herky jerky shifts in strategy to respond to noise on talk radio and cable TV is no way to run a public education system. We have wreaked enough havoc on our teachers by not paying them appropriately, increasing class size, requiring too many assessments in 3rd grade, and eliminating incentive pay for masters degrees, among other changes. While there is always room to improve implementation when rolling out new standards, lets not go back to the old, weak standards of the past.
