Greetings All, Im contacting you to let you know that the Ohio Organizing Collaborative is convening a Statewide End Mass Incarceration meeting on September 11th in Columbus Ohio. The meeting will last from 10am-4pm. We are coming together with Returning Citizens, their families, and organizations that are interested in creating opportunities for people with criminal backgrounds. We are also scheduling visits with state legislators to discuss the issues. The Ohio Organizing Collaborative is working on two main issues over the next two years to: 1. Create a statewide fair hiring policy - this is a policy that would allow people with felonies to go through an interview process and be deemed employable before a background check is done. The policy also has other stipulations that would make city departments list the felonies that are not allowed to apply for specific jobs. We believe this will increase opportunities for Returning Citizens to find gainful employment to take care of their families. 2. Increase money for rehab instead of incarceration - We have found that for every $1 we spend on drug treatment we spend $5000.00 on the prison industrial complex! We believe that more money could go to job training programs and drug rehabilitation programs. There are things moving around both of these issues in the state now and we want to get our people ready to stand up for themselves.
