Greetings! I am starting a new Marimba Orchestra here on the big Island of Hawaii temporarily referred to as the BAMO or Berrys Advanced Marimba Orchestra. There is no limit to the size of this group and although Marimba will be the basis of the orchestra all instruments are welcome. The only pre-requisite to join this group is to possess a firm handle on what I call the ARF or African Rhythm Fundamentals. It is Rhythm that is the trickiest element in most African inspired music and I want to save the Orchestra rehearsals for arranging music rather than teaching fundamentals. There are 8 fundamentals and I am offering an 8 week course starting September 6th - October 25th. Classes will be held for two hours once a week. The cost of the course will be $320 Kamaaina and $450 for those from off island (trade may be available). Auditions will be held after the course to ascertain whether the individual has a basic mastery of ARF. Those who pass the audition will be invited into the Orchestra. The money spent on the course can be seen as an investment for those who wish to join the band. Making the cost of the course back can be done through non mandatory gigs locally, inter-island, on the mainland and internationally. Regardless of joining the Orchestra this course will be very useful for anyone wanting to know the ancient wisdom behind the rhythmic dance music of Africa. Once the ARF are mastered it should be easy and fun to learn many styles of African Music. The ARF can be applied to ANY instrument and all sorts of music. Again all musicians are welcome regardless of what instrument they play. For class times, location, trade options or other details e-mail me at Chrisberry.cb@gmail Private lessons are also available for those who cannot join the course or who feel they do not need to enroll in the full 8 week course. Blessings to you all! Chris Berry
