On July 24 the Keith Droste stars with bassist David Enos and drummer Steve Pemberton. At one time Keith studied with Oscar Peterson and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald but most often these days he’ll be found playing in pops orchestras or shows where a pianist is needed. He began a life-long love affair with the piano at the age of five when he noticed some friends down the street who were taking piano lessons and looked like they were having fun. Although Keith also played drums into his 20’s, he continued private piano lessons and graduated from the Berkelee College of Music in Boston. Keith has worked with a variety of vocalists during his career. For example, he was Frankie Avalon’s music director for 15 years and he backed Annette Funicello, James Darren, Johnny Mathis, Bob Hope, and Peggy Lee. But he considers his time with Ella and Oscar the zeniths of his career. Raised in the San Francisco bay area, David Enos first picked up the bass at the age of 15 and was quickly playing in rock, country, and R&B bands in local area clubs. Eager to learn more about music, David joined his high schools jazz program, and within a year was named the schools Outstanding Jazz Musician and awarded a scholarship. At Chabot College, David met what was to be the most important musical influence of his life, pianist Frank Sumares, who exposed David to the music of Jazz greats like Oscar Peterson and John Coltrane. David continued his studies at San Jose State University, where he received a Bachelors degree. Over the past few years, David Enos has established himself as one of todays premiere bassists, equally accomplished on both acoustic and electric basses. David is not only in demand as a live performer, but is also a sought-after session player, working with such preeminent artists as Arturo Sandoval and David Benoit. Most recently The Merc audience heard him as part of the Misha Piatigorsky Trio. Listen to his music at ccmcollege/faculty/bass/davidenos.php. Jazz drummer/percussionist Steve Pemberton has gained an international reputation as an incredibly versatile and sensitive musician. Looking at his background, it becomes obvious that he is constantly reinventing himself, refusing to be pigeonholed as a single-faceted artist. Steve graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Berklee College of Music and then toured in concert and on television throughout Europe, North & South America and Asia. Most recently Steve held the position as jazz drumset specialist & utility percussionist with the prestigious Boston Pops Orchestra. He held down the drum chair and was featured as a member of ten-time nominated and two-times Grammy Award winner Peter Neros Trio for sixteen years. Some recent performance highlights include recordings and performance with Patti Page, Mel Torme, Grover Washington, Jr., Doc Severinsen, the Count Basie and Quincy Jones Orchestras, John Pizzarelli, Bill Watrous, Tom Scott, and Pete Christlieb. He has worked with 125 orchestras worldwide include the LA Philharmonic for a Henry Mancini tribute at the Hollywood Bowl. Steve also had the privilege of performing at the White House for Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush (Sr.), Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford. coming next to Jazz at The Merc...
