Greetings: This serves as your formal invitation to the 2014 Black Male Summit sponsored by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Dean of Students Office, Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program, Pamplin College of Business, the Race and Social Policy Research Center, the Department of Recreational Sports, the Division of Student Affairs, The University Academic Advising Center, and VT SWAGG (Students Working to Achieving Goals and Graduation) of Virginia Tech. On April 4, 2014 we have planned a one-day conference for black male students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty and staff. The purpose of Virginia Tech’s Black Male Summit is to encourage Black males in the university community to turn ideas into action. We have also extended invitations to various colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with prominent keynote speakers and attend facilitated discussions where they will be encouraged to create strategies to enhance the college experience of underrepresented minority and low-income students. This year’s theme “My Brother’s Keeper, Turning Ideas into Action” will help foster stronger social, academic, and emotional connections among African American males in the Virginia Tech community. It is our hope that the conference will allow students, faculty and staff from throughout Virginia to come together to discuss issues pertinent to their lives and to build a network of support for one another. This conference will take place in the Bowman Room of the Jamerson Athletic Center at Virginia Tech and will begin at 9:00 A.M. and end by 3:30 P.M.
