Greetings, fellow Central Ohio Birders! This Saturday, March - TopicsExpress

Greetings, fellow Central Ohio Birders! This Saturday, March 29, is the monthly Columbus Audubon Avid Birders group trip. And what better location to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of spring than Spring Valley Wildlife Area? Our itinerary begins at Spring Valley, where we will look for returning wetland birds, such as rails, shorebirds, waders, and waterfowl, along with swallows and sparrows. We’ll check out a flooded quarry just north of Spring Valley for waterfowl afterwards, and then head over to nearby Caesar Creek, which has a reputation for surprising birds. Just this week, a California Gull has been hanging about the area, and rare loons and grebes are always a possibility. After we are satisfied with birding the Caesar Creek area, we’ll head on up to Buck Creek Reservoir and Old Reid Park east of Springfield (note a pattern in our destination names?), which are also good spots for odd birds. Time permitting, we will stop at one or more of the western Franklin County Metroparks on our way back to Columbus, such as Prairie Oaks, Battelle-Darby, or Glacier Ridge. Reports of a mega-rarity elsewhere in Ohio may result in a last-minute change of plans. As usual, the carpool meeting location is the southeast corner of the Worthington Mall Parking Lot at 5:30 AM. Bring lunch, gas money, and weather-appropriate clothing (as of this writing, the forecast is calling for a chance of rain and high temperatures in the 40s).
