Greetings from Afghanistan. Please use social media to share one of the greatest success stories and miracles that has happened here in the last decade! Maternal mortality rate drops 1,600 to 327 (deaths per 100,000 births) since 2000. afghanzariza/2014/12/10/investment-in-midwifery-key-to-reducing-maternal-mortality-in-afghanistan-report#sthash.FgXDfHbT.dpuf At a recent maternal health conference, Dr Ahmad Jan Naeem, acting Minister of Public Health said, “In 2002, there were only 467 midwives in the country. A decade later, more than 4,600 midwives work in Afghanistan and they have been instrumental in reducing Afghanistans maternal mortality from 1,600 to 327. But there is still a long ways to go. According to the Afghan Society of Midwives, the successes so far achieved only reach about 23% of the long term target goals have been met. There is a need for about 25-30,000 midwives and maternal health workers to serve Afghanistans approximately 35 million population. UNFPA 2014 report on the state of maternal health and midwifery reports that Afghanistan is the first country in South Asia to have set specific standards for midwives certification and training. countryoffice.unfpa.org/filemanager/files/afghanistan/2014/reports/midwifery_report_2014_english.pdf As militaries, NGOs, aid groups, and western media abandon Afghanistan, let us not forget to support the incredible women, midwives, doctors, nurses, birthing assistants, who are at the heart of providing good maternal care to Afghanistan. Another aspect to this is that few high schools or even universities in Afghanistan have proper science laboratories and facilities, or qualified, competent science teachers, especially for girls. This is a critical gap in the production of excellent medical workers in the future. Please thank all nurses, midwives, OB-GYNs, maternal health workers for the miracle of bringing life in the world. Please raise advocacy and awareness to the incredible, inspiring success achieved in the last decade in maternal care.
