Greetings from Old Europe on the 12th Anniversary of 9/11 - President Obama needs to take a basic speech class at the local community college Rant #2 – It’s time to revive the military draft. - Hello sports fans – I’m safe and secure writing to you from an exquisite mid 16th century baroque marble bunker with a enough wine to last the zombie apocalypse, an eight foot rise in sea levels ala Al Gore, or another term of this completely ineffective Congress. – First things first, Old Europe. Old Europe is just that, old. Pensioners seem to make up the majority of the population at least in Paris and Lucerne. No young people to be found. And most disturbing is the trend of women in their 50s & 60s dressing like the 20 something post college demographic complete with flowing dyed blonde ponytails, spandex(a privilege not a right), tight Hello Kitty tank tops, and high heels. This is ‘grandma’ in Paris. It’s a definite appetite killer. – Travel tip – Go to Montenegro. Beautiful people, great food, and an interesting mix of Venetian & Slavic history at very reasonable prices. - Back to the byline - I’ve noticed many many exhortations in the press and on social networking pages to ‘not to forget 9/11’ and rightly so. However, the best way not to forget is to support your country above and beyond just paying your taxes and voting. I recommend military service. And no Americorps is not an alternative. It’s time we all remember 9/11 by doing a tour on active duty or even the Nasty Guard. This includes sending your sons and I guess daughters (that’s another rant) to defend the nation. How you might ask? Easy – reinstate compulsory military service aka the draft. I can hear the grimace. Enough with the bumper stickers, shop signs, waving flags– etc. etc. The best way to remember 9/11 is to serve. After 12 years of outsourcing our military to the sons and daughters of distant relatives, and friends of friends it’s time for everyone to serve. We all love and support the troops because they take all the risks. Is there a better and more appropriate way to remember 9/11 and honor those who were slaughtered? – Back to the surreal world of our foreign policy or lack of…My French is lousy but the French prime minister looked and acted like a leader selling the cause to use military force in Syria to the French Parliament. Being a native English speaker I had no earthly idea what message our President was trying to convey regarding Syria and the use of force in last week’s speech. I know all you Obama sycophants are loathe to hear this but Mr. Obama is without a doubt the weakest presidential leader in the last 150 years beating out to President Carter, President Coolidge, and Franklin Pierce – in that order. Well Mr. Cavalli what should President Obama do? Easy – Mr. Obama should grab that useless Speaker of the House- John Boehner, and the patrician Republican Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell by the scruff of the neck and demand an emergency joint meeting of Congress. Being serious about redlines etc..Mr. Obama should demand that Congress give him a declaration of war (not done since 1941) against the Assad regime, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, and all the other ash & trash jihadists who want a piece of the U.S. No more of this bullshit ‘reset’of diplomatic relations, ‘undeclared’ war on terrorism, and light footprint approach to foreign policy in the Middle East. I can hear the refrain; What about the Russians? What about them? Mr. Obama can diplomatically as possible if he wants to tell Czar Putin to go pound sand. Above all else Mr. President be clear in articulating your foreign policy goals and not like a used car salesman schlepping off a Ford Pinto to your base. And the Euros? I’m sure they’ll support us until they run out of ammo or one of their soldiers gets killed – a few weeks time. Anybody got a better idea? In the meantime Mr. Obama keeps painting himself into a tighter corner…Time for a grappa.
