Greetings, readers of The Evangelist! This week’s issue celebrates Catholic Schools Week, which is Jan. 18-25! Here are the highlights of that and the rest of the issue: • Pope Francis, in a surprise announcement, says he’ll canonize Blessed Junipero Serra when he visits the U.S.; other articles recap his recent trip to Asia, including hugs for street kids; • Catholic media outlets and the pope reflect on respect for religion vs. freedom of expression, and how to handle satire aimed at religion; • a Nigerian bishop wants the West to intervene to stop Boko Haram; • Albany’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception hosts an interfaith prayer service; • Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger writes in his column about both the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the protection of life; • the “seminarian’s diary” column reflects on priests and suffering; • the Catholic Schools Week section offers photos from many area schools, a profile of a Bishop Maginn High athlete, a Schenectady principal’s big plans, reflections on teaching decades ago vs. today, a mentoring program at St. Ambrose School in Latham; • a high school junior writes poignantly about a service trip to Guatemala; • Rev. Ken Doyle, in his Q&A column, helps a gay couple find a good parish; and • photos and “Newsflash” world and national items cover Roe v. Wade, climate change, Martin Luther King, Supreme Court cases, a follow-up to the pope’s visit to the Philippines and anti-Islam marches in Germany. DON’T FORGET: The Evangelist does not publish an issue next week! We’ll be back Feb. 5. Thank you for supporting your diocesan newspaper!
