We must obey the ten commandments, if we are to have the gospel passage today apply to us, “…the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirty-fold.” As we just read from the Book of Exodus, they cover very thoroughly the whole gamut of human activity. However, for our spiritual emulation they can be reduced to two. The first three have to do with love of God, not worshipping false gods, not taking the name of God in vain and keeping holy the sabbath. The remaining seven deal with love of neighbor, because of God. They are logical offshoots from the first three commandments. Actually if we have the love of God in our daily lives, we also, as a consequence, show the love of even our worst enemies. Certainly, God has a tremendous love for all people and never forsakes them as long as there is a breath of life left in them, as Christ showed by His whole life on earth, climaxed by His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. As we make what He stands for our own we are bound to live the ten commandments.
