Grey Again Today, But Turning Brighter & Colder Soon All the - TopicsExpress

Grey Again Today, But Turning Brighter & Colder Soon All the headline talk on this front page these last few days has been of the brief but sharp cold snap heading our way later this week. We’re still on track for a very windy and cold blast of arctic air, which will arrive on Thursday and last through Friday and bring snow in places, along with hard overnight frosts. But for now, some of you may be wondering what’s happened to that very bright round thing in the sky these last few days, as it’s been rather dull and gloomy across many areas. Today will be rather grey again, but there is sunlight at the end of the cloudy tunnel, as a cold front moving south today and tomorrow introduces clearer skies from the north, with most areas eventually seeing some sunshine on Wednesday before night falls. It’s not good news in the sun stakes for today though, with generally cloudy skies once again. To add to the gloom, we have some fog patches across parts of the Midlands and eastern England, The fog will be stubborn in places and where it lingers temperatures will really struggle. Despite the cloud and fog, it will remain mostly dry though across the bulk of England and Wales, but thicker cloud and strong winds are bringing heavy rain across northern Scotland this morning. This wind and rain will push slowly south across Scotland through the day, spilling across Northern Ireland and perhaps the far north of England by late afternoon. The far north of Scotland will end the day on a drier and brighter note though, as those colder and clearer conditions move down. Temperatures will reach 7-9C generally today, perhaps only 3-4C where the fog lingers. The weather front bringing the rain across the north today will continue south across northern England, Wales and The Midlands tonight, clearer and colder conditions following across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England, with a touch of frost likely by dawn here. A damp start across Wales, central and eastern England Wednesday morning as the band of rain along a cold front continues south, reaching southern England by early afternoon, before clearing the south coast late afternoon. Brighter and colder conditions will follow from the north, with most areas ending up dry with sunny spells, though wintry showers and strong winds will affect the far north of Scotland. Then on Thursday morning, a deep area of low pressure sliding east close to northern Scotland will introduce gales or severe gales across northern areas through the day, along with a band of rain moving southwards, which will reach southern England by the evening. Much colder air will follow from the north, so the rain band will turn increasingly to snow on the back-edge, followed by snow showers packing in across northern areas. Damaging wind gusts of 60-70mph are likely across northern areas - so we could be looking at blizzard conditions with any heavy snowfall, with drifting over exposed higher ground. The wind will ease as we head into Friday, but it will be rather cold, mostly dry and sunny, though snow showers will continue for a time along coastal areas exposed to the cold north to northwesterly wind. Some snow showers perhaps making it inland, for example, through the Cheshire Gap towards The Midlands. High pressure will return across southern Britain over the weekend, so mostly fine, dry and cold here after a frosty start in the mornings. Cloudier across northern areas, with some patchy rain at times.
