Grief in Leadership - Lisa Maher Dan and I led a bit more of a relaxed week around camp. We had a fair bit of prep time mixed with a few sessions and some site practicum. It was my second time being an assistant leader. I definitely found it to be a totally different experience from leading the rock climbing journey. I was really not myself that week. It was the week following the passing of my grandfather. Dealing with grief in a leadership role is tough; people are constantly watching how you are acting. I usually try to be bubbly and excited and that was definitely not the case that week. In PLAIDs I carried myself in a more serious manner and by LED that Friday it had been noticed by a few people. I may not be a counselor but I do know that it is important to allow yourself time to grieve, even if you are in a leadership position. But that also does not mean you can just let yourself coast through the experience. I definitely let myself do so. Not putting your all into what you are doing does not leave you feeling at all accomplished about your work. When I think back to that week, it almost seems like a blur. Through my experience that week I really learned that some of the difficulties of leading through a tough situation. I found that it was not really possible to keep my personal issues separate from my ability to lead. What was going on in my life had some pretty major effects on how a carried myself a leader.
