Groin pain can be caused from many areas (adductor, abdominal, pubic bone, hip, hip flexor, referred pain from back) and factors (overuse, poor pelvic control, poor core strength, increased muscle tone). Unfortunately all four factors occur in many adolescents who play many different sports and a regular basis (5-6x/week). It is a common problem in GAA players under 20 years of age and many revert to surgery for a quick fix with a high possibility of it recurring later. From my experience, over 80-90% of chronic groin problems can be rehabbed effectively. Once hip range of motion has been regained, pubic bone tenderness reduced, inner and outer range strength of adductors improve, adequate strength ratios with other muscle groups, certain degree of core stability and reduced muscle tone particularly in glutes and adductors, improvement will follow.
