Ground Transportation Costs Keep Slipping The total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers dropped another 0.83 percent in September from August, according to the Canadian General Freight Index. Freight rates continue to decrease in all sectors, other than the slight increases seen in cross-border truckload, said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx. Overall, total freight costs are 0.75 percent above year earlier, domestic LTL and cross-border truckload are above, while domestic truckload and cross-border LTL are below year over year. Ground transportation costs have been slipping for the past several months and Payne said: The decline from March to June of this year follows the same pattern as March to June of 2013, however this year the decline is not as steep.” The Base Rate Index decreased by 0.84 percent when compared to August 2014 and average fuel surcharges dropped as well. Fuel was 20.75 percent of base rates in September versus 21.48 percent in August.
