Grove Humane Society Seeking Permanent Adoptive Home or Foster Care for Diabetic Cat. Please take me home! My name is Gordon, and I am a handsome 2 year old tabby cat who is very affectionate and playful. I am seeking a permanent adoptive home or foster care because of my recently diagnosed medical condition. You see, I have diabetes. My condition is very similar to that found in humans. It is definitely treatable with a low carbohydrate wet canned cat food diet and twice daily insulin injections. But wait - before you get overwhelmed and turned off by the thought of injections, realize this: it is totally doable! It is a learned skill. There are tutorials available and there are those at the Grove Humane Society and their veterinarians who will help walk you through it. Just know that feline diabetes is not a death sentence for me and caring for a cat with the disease is far easier than anyone may think. Feline diabetes is a manageable disorder and many diabetic cats like me can lead a happy, healthy life, but I need a special home today. Please give me a shot! The Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake will require Gordons caregiver to meet certain criteria. For the prospective permanent adoptive family or for foster care, please know that you do not have to have prior experience with diabetes. You just have to be willing to learn it and invest a little extra effort in keeping Gordon healthy. As Gordons caregiver, you must be willing to: 1. provide a low-carbohydrate wet canned cat food diet. 2. administer insulin shots twice daily. This is very easy and the cat can hardly feel it because insulin shots are given in the loose skin of the scruff or in the fat layer of the side or belly. 3. coordinate closely with the Grove Humane Society veterinarians or your family veterinarian for appropriate treatment of feline diabetes. Usually blood and urine tests are done during regular visits with the vet to determine appropriate insulin therapy. 4. monitor the cat for signs of complications associated with diabetes. Gordons caregiver is encouraged to study educational materials about feline diabetes on FelineDiabetes or DiabeticCatCare. To assist a family interested in permanent adoption of Gordon, the Grove Humane Society will provide the wet canned cat food and all insulin and syringes for 6 months after adoption. For foster care applicants, the Grove Humane Society provides all food, insulin, syringes and veterinarian care until a permanent forever home can be arranged for Gordon.
