Growing up in Harlan Co. Ky. One of our favorite games was to play church. Each of us would pick a person in the church and pretend to be them. I was almost always aunt Berthy. (Bertha Saylor) she sang and played the guitar. That, and a tambourine were the only music in the church. We used a stick for the guitar and a pie pan for the tambourine. We would sing the church songs and we knew every song by heart. My little sister janet like playing Uncle Si Saylor. He never changed facial expressions and said, Praise the name of the lord. every few minutes. And he would clap his hands one time each and every time.. I have been called Aunt Berthy when I grew up because I too, played the guitar and sang in church. I cannot think of better role models than those old, spirit filled folks back in the old days.
