Growing up on Lee Street, right by the railroad tracks was fun. In our neighborhood, south of the tracks, we had many young kids living back this way. Mama still lives in the same house I grew up in there. The Tates on our left and the Sikes on our right. Jim Sikes (RIP my friend) and David Tate and I would play cops n robbers, cowboys n Indians or whatever struck us that day, and many times the 3 of us would play on the tracks, walk the trestle, make forts and had clubs, I had an old trolley in my back yard at one time, the cable was strung up between 2 huge pecan trees, had a hook on the wheel and an old tire hanging from it. We wore that ole thing out. I remember riding my bike, baseball glove hanging off the handlebars, to baseball practice and games many a day back at the old baseball field. I would go down the Hood Street Alley take a left on Mimosa, right on Jackson, left on Johnson, then Id hafta start pedaling really fast as I turned right onto Forrest Street, to build up enough speed to make it past Charles Smithharts big ole bear of a dog that would chase any bike riders that happened by. Sometimes hed get so close barking and snapping at the wheels that Id hafta throw my right leg over on the other side of my bike and just stand on the left pedal with my left leg hoping and praying that Id have enough speed to make it past the Crawfords and Boyles house at the end of Forrest and make it to the beginning of the baseball field! That dog gave me nightmares!
