Guardians of the Galaxy. I didnt even want to watch this but felt I had to given the positive reviews and of course the fact its part of the ongoing Marvel continuity. It is absolutely brilliant! One of the funniest action adventure films Ive seen in years with such a great cast and a whole bunch of loveable characters. Chris Pratt is incredible (thankfully, as he stars in next years eagerly-awaited Jurassic World!) and oozes charisma as the galactic thief-cum-hero Peter Quill whos only connection to his life on Earth is a cassette Walkman with a mixed tape including 70s and 80s music. Both Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are funny and sweet as Rocket and (I am) Groot, Zoe Saldana sports green skin this time around and Bautista is surprisingly a good actor and in my opinion the funniest of the five. Light-years better than the Avengers Assemble (which, ahem, in all fairness was no masterpiece anyway...), and the dynamic between each character is both funny and touching. It makes you realise just how horrible the Avengers are to one another and how its nothing more than a team of egos and characters whose skills are sometimes far too flawless. And this is what makes the Guardians ten times more interesting; theyre dysfunctional, theyre at times inappropriate, but their hearts are all in the right place and refreshingly they arent scientists for once. For those who may not like the comparisons with Avengers, it is after all a Marvel movie featuring a group of heroes. Well, sort of...9.5/10 :)
