Guilty on 17 of 18 Counts for Officer-Involved Shootout Galley Faces Up to 257Years at Sentencing CASTLE ROCK – Late this afternoon, a Douglas County jury found Clifford Charles Galley II, 24-years-old of Northglenn, guilty on 17 of 18 counts regarding a 2013 shootout and high-speed chase with police (Case number: 2013CR128). On February 23, 2013, 20 members of the North Metro Drug Task Force were in Castle Rock to arrest the defendant, who was a fugitive, traveling via a stolen vehicle, and participated in two burglaries in Castle Pines. When the defendant pulled into a Taco Bell drive thru, law enforcement officers moved in. The defendant repeatedly rammed the stolen 3 ¾ ton truck into officers’ vehicles in the drive-thru, eventually injuring two officers. One officer was crushed and suffered extensive serious bodily injury. “Today a conscientious and detail-oriented jury reinforced a simple truth in this community, that we will protect those who protect us,” said District Attorney George Brauchler. “It is only by luck and divine intervention that this was not a murder trial about the deaths of those who have dedicated their lives to preserving the peace in our neighborhoods. It is fitting for this extreme, wide-ranging, lethal conduct to result in a potential sentence to prison of more years than we’ve been a country.” The defendant then led law enforcement on a 24-mile high-speed chase -- reaching speeds of more 125 MPH -- through Castle Rock and Parker while shooting his weapon at the police. Officers made two failed attempts to use “stop sticks” and fired multiple AR-15 rounds at the fleeing truck. The Defendant abandoned the vehicle in the Clarke Farms neighborhood, where he and his alleged accomplices attempted unsuccessfully to carjack a woman, before fleeing on foot. “The defendant’s trail of destruction back on that cold winter night in February 2013 put the very people who protect our communities scrambling for their lives,” Deputy District Attorney Brian Eckhardt. “Jurors delivered justice for law enforcement today with these verdicts. Today’s verdict ensures that the community is safer and that the defendant is where he needs to be.” After one of the co-defendants was shot by police, he abandoned her under a tree and then fled on foot. He was ultimately apprehended several hours later walking through a neighborhood. Subsequent to his arrest and incarceration, the shot co-defendant married the defendant while he was in jail awaiting trial. The trial was six days and the jury deliberated for two. The defendants sentencing will be on August 22, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse, Div. 3. ###
