Gulfport at Hattiesburg Lot of fans are asking what happen at this game and why did the mayhem happen after the final play? We broadcasted the game and did video tape what had happen but feel no need to post that video just a snap shot of the teams on the field. Now we cannot write about every little thing that happen that might have contributed to the spark that ignited mayhem at the end of the game. We believe some of it was frustration on Gulfports part as in every game there are flags that teams may not agree with but more magnified when they are thrown at the end of the game and then to have the wheels to fall off and lose the 24 point lead and lose the game. This post is written by Matt Stats. To start the game Gulfport scored on their first 4 possessions and left 24 to 0 and then 24 to 6 at halftime. There was play that the first down marker showed 2nd down but yet it was in front of the chains. Refs had to conference with each other to see where the ball needed to be place. With it being so close to the first down or actually in front of the chains Gulfport Coach Peirce asked for a measurement and was told they were not going to measure. Ref would say later the ball was spotted wrong. Gulfport did get a first down on the next play. It went to half time. Second half Hattiesburg would make the comeback in combination of Gulfport not making the plays. Hinder with Gulfport Quarter back having a hurt leg and was not mobile but still running QB run plays which did not go for much. Earlier in the 3rd quarter Gulfport would gor for it on 4th down inside their own 35 and not get it giving the ball to the Tigers at the 35 yard line of Gulfport. Now Hattiesburg made the plays to get back into the game. As the game was winding down again there were flags yes most on Gulport and some were obvious like a face mask then others that the ref on the other side of the field throw on a play on the opposite side of where the play was going. Again you can go to any game and it will happen. Refs try their best and thou some may say these refs were helping the home team Hattiesburg. But I, Matt Stats never say on the radio try to say the refs are throwing that flag to help one team or the other. Hattiesburg would tie the game but yet Gulfport drove down to the 15 yard and it was 3rd and 2. Gufport QB ran to the right to get a first down but that is where that flag was thrown by the back judge to bring it back and now had it at the 28 yard line 3rd and 15. Again late game flags are magnified when it looks to have decided the outcome of the game.Gulfport would line up to attempt the game winning Field Goal with 2 seconds in regulation. That kick was blocked and went into overtime. Gulfport would start with the ball in overtime. Before the first play was run there was a penalty on Gulfport for illegal procedure so back 5 yards. Gulport overcame it and what was thought a touchdown was mark at the 1 yard line. Ref was right there so he had to mark what he saw. 4th down Gulfport in the jumbo package ran the ball and it was like a rugby play where the offensive line was pushing the defensive line and could not see the runner and when the ref ran up to look and un-pile the players he said no touchdown. Hattiesburg now with the ball just needed any kind of points. Now even before that first play penalty on Gulfport for unsportsmanlike conduct move the ball up to the 5 yard line. Still before the first play is run a illegal substitution on Gulfport move the ball to the 2 1/2 yard line. Hattiesburg finally runs a play and right up the middle Touchdown game over. Overcome with emotions after making a great comeback the Hattiesburg teams ran out on the field as if they won the state championship game. Now I (matt stats) did not think there was nothing wrong with this. Team full of emotion and to win the game it was time to celebrate.Was it over the top? Yes. But understandable. Did Gulfport like that? Probably not. But have to just deal with it. Now with tie breakers for playoff spots can be base on point differential. Hattiesburg had to kick the extra point. Before they would line up Gulfport team were leaving the field. Hattiesburg was actually lining up to kick the extra point without Gulfport on the field. But Gulfport did send out the special teams unit to block against the extra point attempt. The kicker made the kick but 2 Gulfport player came in and hit both the kicker and holder hard knocking them down. This was the spark that ignited the Mayhem. As once this happen both teams ran at each other in the middle of the field. As you would imagine there was a lot of players and coaches and we did not see any one in particular to throw a punch. It was a matter of less then 5 minutes before teams were separated. Was there any players/coaches carted off the field? We saw None. Did any players/coaches get hurt during this mayhem? Unknown? Will any players/coaches will be suspended or on probation? Have to wait and see. We feel yes some players maybe out a game or more. Could this cost either team a playoff spot for the action taken? MHAAS would gather all the information and will take what action. Final Score 38 to 31 Hattiesburg over Gulfport. Last season Gulfport won in overtime 50 to 43 over Hattiesburg. Penalty for the game unofficially close were......... 12 for 98 yards for Gulfport 6 for 40 yards for Hattiesburg Below are snaps from the video that was taken. You can see what we saw and hard to see any thing in particular that may have happen. Really rather not be posting about what happen but wanted to try to clear the air on what we say. Hard to put into words how this game went and the emotions got to some players/coaches on both teams. Does this post answer the questions about what happen in this game? Probably not for some.
