Gun Violence: This is one of our most challenging problems and must be addressed. One way is to treat gun permits like driver’s licenses. 1- There has to be a written or oral test that covers psychological, mental, and social status of the applicant. 2- Every applicant’s history and background must be checked thoroughly. 3- Each applicant application must be classified as to what type of gun or weapon he or she is applying for- similar to driver’s license classification. This will provide state and Federal authorities with means to assess how risky or extreme the applicant’s request is. 4- Nobody under 21 is allowed to purchase or carry guns. 5- Carrying a gun must be restricted to hunting places, homes, and other limited locations where the person’s profession demands or requires carrying a gun. 6- Gun permits must be renewed every 4 years. 7- Violations of some of the above procedures must be treated according to the law and the law must be enforced. Any NRA and others blockage of the above, inciting violence, or applying pressure on our representatives must be treated as unlawful acts and they should be tried in the court of law. Funding of NRA and the like should be made public. Unfortunately what I am recommending is a wish list since NRA lobbyists are very powerful and the events of the last 9 months show that Congress is divided and either unable or unwilling to agree on a reasonable measure to reduce gun violence. Unfortunately this is one of the shortcomings of our system. Many Americans will be killed or become victims of gun violence until our Congress and state representatives do their job and serve us in this critical area.
