Gunmen Attack Zawadi Bus in Amuru, Rob Millions By: Our Reporter Godfrey Kiratira, a 32 year old driver of Zawadi Bus services is admitted at Lacor Hospital, Gulu after sustaining injuries in a highway robbery in Atiak Sub County along the Gulu-Nimule highway. zawadi1 Initial reports indicate that unknown gunmen moving in a numberless motorcycle, ambushed and robbed the Zawadi bus registration number UAV 335W which was traveling from Kampala to Elegu border post in Amuru. The attack was carried out last evening at Wiliwili, 2 kilometers to Bibia trading centre. Aswa region police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema says the robbers, armed with an SMG rifle singled out one Charles Waya, a passenger who was traveling with a bag which reportedly contained huge sums of money. Sources that were together with Waya at the time of the robbery say he could not talk but only cried after the robbers vanished with the bag. Okema adds that Waya reported to the local authority that over UGX 200 Million that belonged to about three people who came together in business was robbed from the money changer who operates at Elegu border Market. Okema suspects that Waya was being trailed since he was the only person targeted in the robbery. Meanwhile John Bosco Ochan, the LC3 chairman for Atiak said that the driver attempted to proceed even as one armed robber shot at the bus, but another gunman aimed at his legs and incapacitated him. None of the other passengers were reported injured. Ochan now says that three people have now reported claiming that part of the money lost belonged to them. The incidence comes at a time when police has reintroduced check points at major highways to curb robbery and ensure safety of travelers. Police have revived compulsory check points along the Packwach-Karuma highway following several cases of armed robbery targeting vehicles plying the route. Some of the recent cases of robbery involved buses belonging to KK Traveler, California Coach and GaaGaa bus services.
