Gunmen abduct Delta PDP vice-chairman, kill police orderly SOLA ADEBAYO July 15, 2013 No Comments » The Delta State Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Emmanuel Ighomena, has been abducted by gunmen wearing military and police uniforms. Ighomena, whose police orderly was killed in the encounter, was kidnapped along Benin/ Warri Bypass, on his way from Asaba, the state capital. However, the fallen police officer was said to have demonstrated unusual bravery as he killed one of the gunmen before he was overpowered and shot dead by the hoodlums. The gunmen were said to have escaped from the scene with Ighomena and bullet- ridden remains of their colleague. Ighomena, a former Commissioner for Power Energy in the administration of his kinsman, Chief James Ibori, was on his way to his hometown, Oghara, the headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government, before his abduction. Security sources told our correspondent yesterday that the victim was apparently trailed from Asaba to the point where he was abducted. Sources said the kidnappers had contacted members of the family of the politician to discuss details of his release from captivity. But the family kept the details of the negotiation to chest at the time of filing this report yesterday. However, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Adaba, who disclosed tha Ighomena was abducted in Edo State, said the PDP chieftain was careless about his security. Adaba said five policemen were assigned to protect Ighomena following the alarm he raised that his life was under threat over a year ago. The commissioner wondered why the former House of Assembly member was moving about with one policeman instead of the five policemen officially assigned to him He said: “Ighomena wrote a letter to us at a time about attempt on his life and we provided five policemen to protect him at his house and hotel but I am surprised that he was moving about with only one of them. “This time around he was accosted along Benin – Warri bypass in Edo State by kidnappers who were dressed in military and mobile police uniforms. “But the policeman in his vehicle, who was initially confused because the invaders appeared in police and military uniforms, obviously applied the rule of engagement when the hoodlums fired at him. He killed one of the kidnappers but unfortunately the force was not enough. “The policeman was overpowered and killed. The resistance would have been overwhelming if the man had gone out with all the five policemen assigned to him.”
