Guqin, Gaohu and Jinghu masters to perform in Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra’s 31st Anniversary Concert Guqin is an ancient Chinese instrument of the zither family. Being the “father of Chinese music” and the “instrument of the sages”, it was played and taught by Confucius as part of his legacy. As 2013 is the 10th anniversary of Guqin’s recognition by UNESCO as a world heritage relic, Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra has great pleasure to invite Guqin virtuoso, Ms Julia Deng to perform two pieces of Guqin music at its 31st Anniversary concert on the last Sunday of August. The Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra (CFCO) was established in 1982 and is now one of the largest Chinese Orchestras outside Asia. It has been an icon for Melbourne in attracting Chinese instrumental musicians from all over the world to perform with the Orchestra over the last 31 years. At this special concert, CFCO is pleased to present a rich programme of music which also include performances by two very special guest musicians, featuring Gaohu solo of a famous piece of Cantonese music, by Mr Zi Tang Guo, formerly of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, and a Jinghu solo of a famous Beijing Opera, performed by Mr Yi Zhang Wang, Concert Master of Melbourne Zhonghua Beijing Opera Society. The rest of the programme will also feature Guzheng (Zither or table harp) solo, Sheng (mouth organ) duet, Youth Ensemble, Pluck-string Ensemble and of course performance by the full orchestra. The orchestra’s repertoires cover both traditional as well as contemporary music, and the conductor is Mr Yat Ping Chan. The concert will be held on Sunday, 25 August 2013 from 4 to 6pm at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Performing Arts Centre.
