Gurez festival deferred: The State Government has postponed Gurez festival which was scheduled later this week in Bandipora district, in the wake of the killing of two youth by Army in the district. Minister for Tourism, GA Mir said the two-dayfestival was postponed as a “mark of respect” to the youth killed in firing by army. Irfan Ahmad Ganaie (17) son of Ghulam NabiGanaie of Teng Mohalla, Markundal and TariqAhmad Laharwal (23) son of Ghulam Qadir of Green Colony, Koundbal, Manasbal were killed by troopers of Safapora-based 13 RR camp. Minister of State for Tourism Sajjad Kichloo said: “Government shares grief of people. Two youths lost their lives, and how can government go on to hold the festival,” he said. Earlier, sources said the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke to Mir and Kichloo for postponing the festival. “He (Chief Minister) wanted the festival should be postponed and conveyed the same to the tourism minister,” sources said. The authorities would later decide on fresh timing for holding the festival. The Gurez festival is aimed at showcasing the tourist destination to the outside world. During the program the authorities concerned were scheduled to hold an exhibition to be participated by various departments while as cultural program and folk dances are other attractions of the festival. The remote and beautiful valley of Gurez, located about 145 kilometers from here, wasopened to tourism a few years back. Later it reappeared on the tourist map of Jammu and Kashmir.
