Guv wants removal of all informal settlers along Airport property BY: MONTESA GRINO-CAOYONAN Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. has ordered the removal of all the illegal settlers along the entrance and right of way of the Iloilo Airport located in towns of Cabatuan-Sta. Barbara, Iloilo that have been considered ‘eye sores’ for tourist arrivals. Defensor has directly addressed his order to new Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines- (CAAP) – Iloilo manager Frederick San Felix who pays visit to the office of the governor Thursday after replacing outgoing Iloilo-manager Efren Nagrama who was assigned in Tacloban City effective last month. Defensor said CAAP owns six-meter wide in both sides of the road going to airport entrance as part of their right of way, however, some illegal structures are currently occupying the space. “The CAAP should not allow informal settlers to occupy their right of way so that there would be no problem when the time we need the space in the near future. Temporarily, enclose the area with cyclone wire”, he said. As best solution, Defensor advised CAAP to provide a service road for those farmers and private land owners living near the airport so that they need not to use the access road going to airport when going to their respective private lot. “The plan is quite expensive but this service road will serve as their right of way in coming in and out to their farms without passing inside the airport as part of security measures”, said Defensor. Presently, there are around 10 illegal structures occupying the vacant space outside the airport. These structures served as sari-sari stores, houses, bars and restaurants. For his part, San Felix said he will air this concern to their Central Office in Manila for immediate action and to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) that acquired the property for other possible solution.
