G’DADDY RON’S GLEANINGS Living in the Land of Foolishness The United States is in rapid transition from a land of wisdom to becoming a land of foolishness. I refer to this new national designation as that of an Idiocracy. This newly coined term is derived from the word idiocy which means something notably stupid or foolish, and the suffix cracy which describes among other definitions, a theory of social organization. Thus, idiocracy may be defined loosely as a type of social organization in which foolishness is one of the prevailing characteristics. When I look back on the past seventy-nine years of life in the country, I am struck by the direction that our thoughts and corresponding actions are taking. The foolishness that has been accepted by an increasing number of people as rational thought and actions today, would have been ridiculed a few years ago. This trend runs across the full spectrum of our society, the social, economic, political, and spiritual components. It permeates our governments at all levels, along with sports, schools, churches, businesses, families, communities, and individuals. Now I admit up front that I am not one of the world’s greatest thinkers. I have never claimed to be an intellectual, a genius, a Renaissance Man, or anything of that nature. But, I have spent most of my life as a student of life, pondering things and trying to glean what I could from life. My educational background includes graduation from high school without honors, a B.A. degree in English with honors, an M.A., and a PhD in Geography. While many of my fellow students had keener minds than mine, none worked any harder than I did. I was a “plodder,” one who perseveres, who is determined through hard work to accomplish the task assigned; just stick to the job until you “git er done.” At an early age I was exposed to the Bible, to God and Jesus, to the importance of hard work, the Golden Rule, the idea that good wins over evil, to books, discipline, the importance of education, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, Boy Scout principles, American heroes and heroines, honesty, trust, loyalty, sports as fun, teamwork, pride in family, community, and nation, to dreams, and unlimited opportunities. Most of the items in my list do not fare too well in this present Land of Foolishness.
