HANDY researchers assert that “societal collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium IF the per-capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion. The historian Arnold Toynbee studied the rise and fall of 26 civilizations and concluded that “they rose by responding successfully to challenges under the leadership of creative minorities.” Dana Meadows in her book The Limits to Growth was a pioneer in calling attention to societal sustainability issues. I feel we are at a point of no return if each of us does not try our hardest to live simply, cleanly, and non-consumptively. What “effective interventions” can we come up with in our daily lives?
