HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John Kramer and Jan Ernst Abraham Volschenk! John Kramer is a South African realist painter. For over forty years he has been photographing and painting small town shops, corner cafes and general dealer stores in the platteland of South Africa. Many of the buildings depicted have long been demolished or altered beyond recognition. Kramer is opening a solo exhibition at the UCT Irma Stern Museum in Rosebank, Cape Town on the 6th September 2014. Volschenk (20 August 1853 - 22 January 1936) was a South African painter, noted for his majestic landscapes of the Langeberg Range in the Western Cape Province. At 51 years of age he gave up his office job and devoted all his time to his oils and canvases. His home district around Riversdale and the Langeberg, was his inspiration and subject matter, and he became a master of the subtle colours and tones of the Karoo mountains. Volschenks keen powers of observation spilled over into natural history - he amassed a collection of more than 4 000 beetle specimens. Images 1-4: John Kramer Images 5-8: Jan Ernst Abraham Volschenk
