HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIDDHARTHA! …Long time ago In a galaxy far away A baby was born … In his first days on the planet he showed very unusual red skin and green hair! Event that combined with the crying made him look like a cute furious tomato from outer space. The rare colors however shifted during the first weeks, giving him a more natural and human like appearance. During his initial months he disliked to be hug or touch by strangers and it came as a big surprise to his mom and myself than when visiting a local Buddhist temple, the baby that normally rejected unknown people, suddenly moved towards the orange robed monks that were meditating and sat very comfortably and quiet between their crossed legs, copying pose and attitude! The surprised Bantes (Sri Lanka Buddhist monks) came out of their meditative state and one of them, discovering the little being on his lap, asked for the name. We, the parents, replay: “Siddhartha”*(name of the prince that would become the Buddha), which draw a big smile in the monks face. For some weird reason we could not comprehend, this 11 month old baby found himself very happy around the community of orange robes. Until he was 2 years old, I discovered him from time to time in contemplative states, sitting on the couch unresponsive while holding a blissful smile and looking somewhere beyond this world. And somehow I knew his mission in life, whatever it is, will come from that space of bliss and that smile… Siddhartha is today a 16 year old teenager, rarely meditates and far from his early heavenly ways had grown to become a typical American boy, giving us as many satisfactions and happiness as headaches and sleepless nights! We love this boy so much! and I personally have learned so many things about myself from our relationship, that I wouldn’t change a second of our rich experience together as father and son. From freezing out butts in the waterfalls of Mount Shasta, camping under the thunderbolts of the Death Valle, to driving madly across California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah in one single draw … it’s been an amazing trip boyo! I love you very much. More than my son you are my friend and I appreciate deeply everything you bring to this world (even when sometimes it drives me crazy!!!) I will be eternally grateful to your mom for the gift of you in my life, and I already envision all the Light that will be your company in the years to come. I am proud of you Siddhartha, and I hope to stay around enough time to witness more of your path on this planet, but if for any reason I couldn’t be here physically be sure I’ll be watching you with a smile while hiding behind the morning light.
